Web Hosting

Have a website; you need web hosting to have people view it. Let’s talk about my web hosting.

Past

I started out hosting a web site on Tripod, I know an odd name. Let’s break down the other web hosting.

  • Tripod
  • Hosted on my works SMB server
  • Hosted on a Windows SMB server in my basement
  • Hosted on a VPS system at Verio
  • Hosted on Site Ground
  • Hosted on Inmontion Hosting
  • Hosted on Namecheap hosting shared hosting
  • I moved one of my domains (travelingwithjustin.com) to EasyWP, a managed WordPress host, at Namecheap.
  • All others are still on Shared hosting

EasyWP

Why did I move travelingwithjustin.com over to EasyWP? Well, this is my largest website by far. It was taking up about 20GB of space on my 50GB hosting plan, pushing about 90% of disk space up. So, I moved over to this EasyWP with 100GB of space. However, it is only for one website.

That is why I moved Travelingwithjustin.com over to that platform. Which is nice, I have about 77% left. Which is good, I have a lot of photos I am going to be adding to this website so all the space I can get will be good.

Like it

Well, my first experience with it wasn’t that positive, and unfortunately, support didn’t really help out the correct way. So, I had to delete the website on EasyWP and then FTP the files from the old account to the new account.

The FTP process took about 6-7 hours to download the file to my computer and another 6-7 hours to upload. Once that was done and the database was imported, it didn’t work.

However, I contacted Tech support, who converted my database tables to the EasyWP format. I had a custom table prefix.

Once that was done and I updated the DNS, the site worked. Yea!!

Different

It is a different format from the one I am used to. They don’t provide access to your files via a Cpanel interface. It all has to be done via FTP, which is a pain. I started to like Cpanel. It has a lot of options.

The propagation to the new IP address was fairly fast—within 20 to 30 minutes once the DNS was updated. Sometimes, it takes a while to push through the internet, but it was quick.

Overall Experience

Would I go back and do this again? I might, depending on my needs. I don’t like not having access to all the files on my website, but it is all managed for me, so I guess that is good.

The initial response to the setup and stuff was not very friendly and helpful. But for people like me who have primary or not-so-basic setups, there could be problems moving the website.
